from the Foreword
by Glenn Close

"... There was a time when I joined the circus, and the person who taught me how to do some dramatic moves on the trapeze, how to walk a tightrope and, most important, how to juggle was Mr. Paul Binder himself‚ the Founder of the Big Apple Circus. ... he was brilliant ‚ ... he was handsome, funny, and full of exciting energy. Flick... catch. Flick-flick ... catch-catch. Slowly, during my sessions with Paul, I began to feel the magic of the circus. Not in any lights or colors or clapping hands, not even in the music. The magic of the circus first captured me when I gained control over an object as simple as a rubber ball, and it became part of me."

Welcome!

As Founder of the Big Apple Circus, Artistic Director and Ringmaster for 32 years, I’ve had the great pleasure of introducing countless people to a vision of classical circus, what I’ve always referred to as “circus done right.”

Now as a senior advisor to the BAC, I’m extending my reach.

Here’s where I’ll show you my passion for circus done right - the intimacy, the joy, the limitless possibility that great circus inspires – and my love for great circus performers. I’ll be happy to introduce you to some of my favorite circus artists and why I find their performances so compelling.  People like the one and only Bello Nock or Kris Kremo or Picaso or Grandma the clown.

Here you can learn about my travels and my take on what’s going on in the circus world and why Variety has called the BAC “the finest up close circus in America.”

Enjoy the show.

Paul Binder is featured in the PBS 6-hour series about life in the circus.
